Sawheads are the cutting attachments mounted on feller bunchers. Disc saws, bar saws, and shear heads — the sawhead determines what a feller buncher can cut and how fast it does it.
A sawhead (also called a felling head or cutting head) is the business end of a feller buncher. It is the attachment that grabs the tree, makes the cut, and holds the stem while the machine stacks it. The sawhead is often the most expensive single component on a feller buncher.
Disc saws spin a circular blade at high speed to cut through the stem. They are the most popular option in softwood and mixed-species operations. Bar saws use a chainsaw-style bar and chain and can handle larger diameter trees. Shear heads use hydraulic shearing blades and are less common today.
Caterpillar, John Deere, Tigercat, and Quadco are the major sawhead manufacturers.
